Parented Swimming Lessons
5-Level Program for Children 4 months to 3 years
Our Parented Swimming Program was developed after feedback from many parents about a void of productive learning for children in this age group. Learn to Swim Thunder Bay has researched many different programs around the world including Australia and the US to develop our own program that encompasses encouraging comfort, confidence and success without trauma for this age group. Our focus is on getting children comfortable with cues for getting wet first and then submersions under the water once that comfort has been achieved.
We also concentrate on having babies learn their own buoyancy in the water through using light touches from their caregivers. The National Institute of Health reports that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in among children ages 1-4 years. We have discovered through teaching babies and children since 1991 that early introduction to swimming lessons makes a huge difference to developing comfort and confidence at a very young age. We look forward to swimming with you and your baby!
Parent and Tot
4-23 Months
We have broken our program into 4 levels that can all be taught simultaneously as the babies and toddlers make their way through a series of progressions. We have grouped these levels into categories based on the age of the babies and toddlers for development purposes but each skill is a progression and is achieved individually once the baby or toddler has mastered it on their own time.
Even if you are introducing your child to the water after 4-5 months, they will still begin at the beginning of the program with learning how to be comfortable with buoyancy, movement and getting wet. Each child is different and has different comfort levels, we want to create a positive environment so that they many learn at their own pace.

Tot Transition: 25-36 Months
The goal of this level is to create a fun and safe environment for toddlers between 2 to 3 years in the water with a caregiver with the goal of transitioning the child to working with the instructor. Skills that are built on are those included in our other parent and tot levels with the addition of front and back glides and working on doing the skills with an instructor as well as the caregiver.
Parent & Tot – All Levels
This class combines all four levels of our Parent & Tot program, allowing children to participate at the level that best matches their abilities and experience.
Our instructors adapt each lesson to each swimmer’s individual needs, working on skills such as safe water entry, blowing bubbles, submersion, floating, kicking and independent movement.
